However, medical terminologies significantly vary from one clinical practice field/medical condition to another. Medical condition selected for this paper is hypertension, which is a common cardiovascular disorder (CVD). This chronic CVD is commonly referred to as high blood pressure. Hypertension is a chronic CVD in which an individual’s arterial pressure is persistently elevated (≥130/80 mmHg) (Saiz et al., 2022). The prevalence of hypertension has increased significantly globally over the last decade (Boateng & Ampofo, 2023). Approximately 50% of U.S. adults have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and this condition is uncontrolled in approximately 75% of this patient population (Muntner et al., 2022). This trend has significantly contributed to serious health complications, including heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure (Anyaogu et al., 2025). Hypertension is critically crucial are in the medical field since this chronic condition significantly contribute high morbidity and mortality rates globally yet it is often asymptomatic. This paper examines various medical terminologies related to hypertension and how they enhance communication among interdisciplinary teams, thereby optimizing patient’s clinical outcomes. Overview of the Condition Hypertension can be primary (essential) or secondary. A significantly high percentage of hypertension cases approximately 85 to 90% are primary cases (WHO, 2023). Gradual development of hypertension does not have a specific identifiable cause. However, essential hypertension is associated with multiple contributing risk factors, including genetic predisposition, sedentary lifestyle, or chronic stress. Environmental factors, including obesity and high sodium intake further predispose individuals to hypertension (Rossios et al., 2023). On the other hand, secondary hypertension is usually caused by underlying medical condition, including chronic kidney disease, endocrine disorders, or renovascular disease (Sudano et al., 2023). Most hypertension cases are usually asymptomatic. Contrarily, symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, visual disturbances, and epistaxis are usually present in severe cases. Hypertension is usually diagnosed following multiple, elevated readings via sphygmomanometry. Hypertension is also evaluated through blood/urine tests. These tests assess end-organ damage associated with hypertension.
